Good news! The Portuguese Government has decided to update the law and the maximum deposits are now limited to the amount equal to 2 months’ rent.
For the longest time since the introduction of NHR, we have seen a rental market under increasing pressure. We have seen 12 monthly contracts where the landlord demands a mix of pre-paid rent and deposits exceeding 12 months upfront.
This has especially been the case because the Visa process does in many cases require you to have a minimum of a 12 months rental contract and with many either being denied or changing their mind then this has certainly created an unhealthy culture.
But according to Portugal News, this is now past.
